Owen,

Hey Owen. How's it going? Loved your book!! On page 101 of the book it mentions omega 3 fish oils and how doctors would inquire to you as to why their patients would respond so well to it. It then goes on to say that there was no definitive answer to this. I was wondering if any thought had been given to the possibility that the patients were all deficient in efa's? which is fairly common. Love what your doing..........Paul

Thanks for the support.

The rest of that sentence is "until the writings of Thomas Smith at Healingmatters.com provided one."

Vitamin C has to enter cells in order to work most of its magic.

Mr. Smith's theory, supported by the literature he found, is that Type II diabetes can be caused by a disturbance of the cell membrane that blocks the transport of glucose (and some vitamin C) into cells. This disturbance is caused by eating processed foods with trans fatty acids. His "fix" is to first eliminate all fats, and then slowly introduce good essential fatty acids, mostly Omega/3s - because cell membranes use what ever fats are available during their ongoing repair processes.

Lots of words to say that healthy fats in the diet promote healthy cell membranes which allow cells to absorb glucose (and vitamin C). So the connection between EFAs and vitamin C is at the cellular membrane.

Hemp oil like all omega 3's needs to be treated like hazardous waste!

First off let me say that I am referring to omega 3 oils that are not
encapsulated in any kind of pill form. Just a plain old bottled oil.

Even though omega 3's have a huge positive impact on health, once
you open the bottle the clock starts ticking and I will say that it is good
for about 30 days provided...

1) It was fresh when purchased

2) It came in a dark bottle

3) It is refrigerated (before preferably and definitely after purchase)

Remember heat, light and air will turn omega 3's rancid quickly!
And just think all these people/restaurants are cooking with canola (high omega 3 content)
thinking its healthy.

Yes I know about how they turn rancid quickly. I order my epa/dha fish oil and hemp oil as a liquid in a dark bottle but I get it shipped to me and i know it sit in a UPS truck at some point to get to me but as soon as I get it, I put it in the fridge. Do you think thats still risky? How can I get the oils fresh and not have to worry about if its rancid?

Good question. A good company will have both best before dates
and date of production printed on the bottle. I always smell any oil
before I use it, if it smells or tastes odd I throw it out. I think another
good source for omega 3's is chia seeds, you don't have to grind them to absorb the oil
like flax seeds.

Just to clarify, there are 3 types of Omega 3 - EPA, DHA and ALA. It appears canola oil has fairly high ALA content but zero EPA and DHA, which are arguably way better for you. Of course, as you point out , we shouldn't cook with it at any rate!

One of the qualities of EFA's is their ability to attract and move oxygen to the cell.
I don't know if this holds true for EPA/DHA.

It seems to me that the taste test should show whether hemp oil is still good or not. Once the omega-3 starts oxidizing, the taste is rancid.
