This forum will focus on the interesting topic of titrating oral vitamin C intake to so-called bowel tolerance, the point just prior to the onset of diarrhea

Oranges come in quite a range of sizes and are picked in varying states of ripeness and are often stored in less than perfect conditions. A range of 50 to 80 milligrams would probably cover most of the fruit you are likely to find.

According to the USDA data base on Vitamin C, oranges contain 95.8 mg.

USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 18

The USDA data base shows the amount of orange as 1 cup. That number will only be valid when 1 orange = 1 cup.

Not so

Hi Dan,

Do the math!
If 180 gms of orange contain 95.8 mg of Vit C.
Then, for example, 135 gm of orange would contain 71.85 mg of Vit C.
Or, 225 gm of orange would contain 119.75 mg.

Cups should work the same way. 3/4ths of a cup should also contain 71.85 mg.

I think it is a most valid general guide.

Hi Lior,

If the molecular formula for Vitamin C is C6H8O6, then the molar mass should be 6*12.001 gm/mol carbon + 8*1.008 gm/mol hydrogen + 6*16.000 gm/mol oxygen = 177.014 gm/mol C6H8O6. If there are 95.8 mg in 8 fl oz , then .0958 gm / 177.014 = 5.4120e-4 mol. Now if 8 fl oz is 236.584 ml, then 5.4120e-4 / .236584 = .0023 M/l should be my estimate of Molar concentration.

Wow, it has been decades since I’ve done that kind of calculations. With all the statins I used to take, I’m absolutely amazed I could even get that far. I might be getting better.

Why did you ask?
