The answer is contained in Pauling's 1986 book HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND FEEL BETTER. Linus Pauling consumed 9,000 mg of ascorbic acid (powder in water) twice per day, for a total of 18,000 mg (18 grams) daily. (Note: He added some bicarbonate to the ascorbic acid powder in water.)

In the same book, his recommended vitamin C intake was 6,000 to 18,000 mg daily.

Note: Today the Institute which bears his name has a vitamin C recommendation less than .5 grams, from memory, 400 mg. We think this absurd.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder why he didn't feel the need to take vitamin c more than twice a day...?

Hickey's dynamic flow theory wasn't developed yet. In my case, taking 9000 mg like Pauling, the throat started to become itchy after 12 hours, so one is reminded that another dose is necessary.

Pauling selected 18,000 mg based on what an animal of his body weight would produce (in their livers). He estimated 9 grams. And he knew from his own experiments that about 1/2 of what we take in by mouth would be lost. He was trying to emulate the dosage evolution had selected in most other specifies.
