Why Movement Turns up your NEAT

Post Number:#1  Post by ofonorow » Tue Jan 08, 2019 4:50 am

One of Ari Whitten's fat-loss tricks is movement. Even ultra-light movement can increase your NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogensis) which obesity experts, such as Mayo Clinic's James Levine says is the key to fat loss.

One page 139 of FOREVER FAT LOSS Ari quotes Levine who discusses Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) which is an enzyme muscles release when they move that allows them to use fats in the blood for energy. A BBC documentary was mentioned.

Levine enters at 33 min.

Started James Levine's book MOVE A LITTLE, LOSE A LOT. The good doctor explains how he became interested in NEAT. There are people who can "eat anything" and never gain weight, and visa versa. Levine performed meticulous experiments to verify this anecdotal observation, and found it was true. The study group was given 1000 extra calories per day, and the results ranged from a 3 lb gain to a 30 lb gain. Different people react to calorie intake differently when it comes gaining weight.

What was the difference?

The answer turned out to be daily movement. How you move when you live your life (Levine makes a strong case that when automobiles are introduced into a society, e.g. China, obesity increases by the same percentage as people using the new cars.)

The movement that maintains a higher metabolism (or higher NEAT) does not include exercise.

Here is the main chart that shows simply standing requires more calories than sitting, but chewing gum can double the calorie burn!

Levine points to various studies that attribute sitting to adverse health effects, including one that found walking one mile every day reduced the risk of dying from a heart attack by 50%. He almost has me ready to try raising my computer desk and using a treadmill while I am at the computer :D
