I couldn't hurt, but from our experience, it isn't necessary. Frequently N-acetyl cysteine is taken in hopes of increasing glutathione (GSH) inside cells, particularly liver cells. Increased (or normalized) GSH is always a good thing.
This is a study done by Pauling's partner's team (Matthias Rath) and from reading the abstract, I am surprised anyone can understand it. (Maybe it was translated from German?) I had heard that Rath had found that this combination, particularly high doses of vitamin C, lysine, proline and green tee extract, stopped cancers from growing. This abstract sounds like an extrapolation to atheroclerosis.
